Smith at work in Forcegarth

Forcegarth Blacksmith

Probably the most interesting aspect at Forcegarth is the evidence which it provides for metalworking. The material from the hearth contained coal, charcoal together with vitrified wood ash, clay and sandstone. For vitrification to happen the temperature of the fire would have to reach 900C. This temperature could not be reached in a normal domestic fire so they would have had to use bellows.

Explore metal objects from Forcegarth and photograph of a hearth, see other craftspeople at work or watch the video clip of smith at work.
