Low Hauxley: The Mesolithic Environment

In the Mesolithic, the sea and sand dunes were a few miles away from our site. An oak and alder fen covered the land. Here and there, small grassy clearings caused by fallen trees were an ideal place to hunt grazing animals like red deer and wild boar.

At Low Hauxley, Mesolithic people could hunt waterfowl in low-lying boggy areas. Alder trees surrounded small streams and pools and oak trees grew in the better-drained areas.
