Low Hauxley Reconstructions: Bronze Age Cairns

Each cist at Low Hauxley was sealed with a large stone slab over the top, and the surrounding area covered with stones to form a cairn. Some cairns sit within large cairnfields, or cemeteries, while others exist in isolation, perhaps only serving a small family group. At Low Hauxley, earlier excavations by Edinburgh University suggest that there was a small group of cairns here, but to what extent the sea has washed away many more, will never be known.

Watch a video clip of a Bronze Age burial, see a photograph of a cist under excavation, or return to Bronze Age burials.
