| | | | The GarderobeThe term 'garderobe' is sometimes used to describe a wardrobe, but in this context it in fact refers to a type of
indoor latrine.
At Thrislington, a door from the solar led to what resembles a stone chimney. Garderobes were eventually supplemented
by the more civilised chamber pot.
Unlike today's toilets, the garderobe had to be periodically emptied (quite literally) by hand. The undercroft
beneath may have been used for storage, perhaps of valuables, or for servants to sleep in, but existence there could
not have been very pleasant, as the garderobe was emptied from here through a door. Later, probably after a short
rethink, the garderobe was rebuilt so that it could be emptied from the garden.

See the garderobe under excavation, or examine the VRML model and
the reconstruction of the solar and the reconstruction of the
undercroft.
