Woodhorn Colliery: Letter about Filler's Gear

In this letter, written in 1936, the Northumberland Miners' Mutual Confident Association has been asked to provide information about practices at other collieries in the county regarding filler's gear.

The letter writer is pressing the union to do something to make mine owners accept responsibility for losses of tools , or provide the gear themselves. Any miner who lost equipment would have had to bear the cost of replacing it himself.

Hear Jim Slaughter talking about the filler's job, see a still image of a filler and watch a video clip of a filler at work.
