Woodhorn Colliery: Shovel and Filler's Shovel

The shovels used in coalmines had a broad shape so that large amounts of coal could be shovelled up at once. They were designed this way because coal is lighter than stone. The shovels also have quite short handles so they could be used in confined spaces.
