Introduction
The hamlet of Old Yeavering (NT 924303), 1km east of Kirknewton, consists of a row of 19th century cottages and, to the south, a detached farm building formerly known as 'King Edwin's Palace'. The Dark Age palace of the kings of Northumbria, mentioned by Bede, is now known to have stood several hundred metres to the north-east, and its site was excavated in the 1950s in advance of gravel digging. The building here described stands east-west, at the foot of the north slope of Yeavering Bell, and lies close to the east bank of a small stream.
