Forcegarth: Dogs in the Romano-British period
Dogs at Forcegarth would have been similar to terriers or deerhounds of today.
They would have played an important role in the herding of sheep and cattle and also hunting.
Strabo, a Greek historian and geographer who lived between 44 BC and AD 23 wrote that Britain produced corn,
cattle, gold, silver, slaves and dogs suitable for hunting.
