Forcegarth Pasture North: Round house interior

Inside the round house was one big room partitioned off in places to create separate areas such as for sleeping and storing. Actually, the round house interior would not have been as bare as we may think. There would have been big extended families living in the house all doing their allotted daily activities.

In this room the fire was burning in an alcove in the wall lined with clay. There would have always been a fire lit in a round house - it would have been considered improper to have it go out. This fire was not only used for cooking and keeping the house warm but there is also evidence that it was used for smithing as pieces of slag have been found.

There is no evidence at Forcegarth for any house decorations but they probably existed as the Iron Age/Romano-British people had elaborate myths and imagery, some of which can be discerned on objects from the period.
