Roofing in Romano-British Forcegarth
The roofs at Forcegarth were constructed using birch.
Timbers were used to construct the structure of the roof then on top of that they covered it with twigs to
keep the upper layers on then covered the twigs with birch bark, which helped keep the rain water from leaking
into the house.
We are not quite sure whether the birch bark would have covered the entire inside of the roof or just the places
where a thatched roof was likely to leak, such as around the porch. The roof was then finally covered with heather
thatch, which would look green when it went on then would fade to a reddish brown colour.
