Gilbert the Miner

Archaeology rarely provides information about specific individuals who lived on these sites, or any specific events in their life. History - the study of written documents - can help fill this gap.

We are very fortunate to have a manuscript documenting an event that happened at Thrislington in 1341. From this document we learn that a miner named Gilbert was excavating for coal in a large pit somewhere in the vicinity of Thrislington. While climbing out of the pit, he slipped and fell, and was badly injured. Gilbert was taken to the chapel, where he died shortly thereafter. This image shows Gilbert on a bier in the chapel, receiving the last rites.

From here you can see a video of Gilbert receiving the last rites or examine the medieval manuscript which details his end.
