The Hearth

Hearths are areas of stone or clay built into the floor of a structure to provide a fireproof setting for an open fire. The fires on these hearths served a variety of purposes, and were used for warmth, light and cooking. Although wood was certainly burnt here, it is more likely that coal was used as the primary fuel. Smoke would have filled the room before exiting through a vent or hole in the roof.

This image shows the hearth constructed of stones set on their edge in a diagonal pattern. This hearth was found in the centre of the manor hall, although similar hearths were found in the cottages and in the kitchen. Also visible is a basket of coal in the foreground, and an empty spit for roasting.

See excavation photographs of the similar hearth, return to the hall, or see other images of the kitchen.
