The Cottages
While the lord and his family lived in the manor, the cottages were the homes of the other members of the village, the
peasants who worked the land. Even before the Thrislington cottages were excavated their existence and position were
visible as earthworks on the ground. Although a large number were apparent, only four were excavated.
The cottages at Thrislington were larger than the average medieval peasant's cottage. A family will have probably lived
in one room of the cottage, while their animals were kept in another room, or else in a smaller building in the backyard.
During the excavations archaeologists found many hearths: stone bases for open fires that were used for cooking, and
for heating the cottage in winter.
