Woodhorn Colliery: Respirator

This respirator dates to the 1920s. It works by filtering air for about an hour, hopefully giving the miner time to find cleaner air to breathe. The nose clip forced the user to breathe through the mouthpiece, in much the same way as divers use an aqualung.
