Woodhorn Colliery Today

Today, Woodhorn Colliery is a museum dedicated to the history of coalmining. The museum opened in 1989 and is housed in the original colliery buildings. Many original buildings have survived and they are an important monument to the Northumberland and national coal industry. Their rarity as typical examples of a late 19th and early 20th century colliery in the North East coalfield has been recognised with their legal protection as Listed Buildings and a Scheduled Monument.

Learn more about the working pit, pit closure, the buildings or return to the Woodhorn Colliery home page.
