Woodhorn Colliery Today: East Fan House

The East Fan House was built in about 1942 replacing an earlier fan house, which was hit by a German bomb in December 1941.

There are several parts to the building, including an engine house, fan house, ventilation chamber, and drift access. Inside are original pieces of machinery, including electric motors, drive belts, monitoring instruments and a very rare example of a Walker fan.

The fan was used to ventilate the mine and is more precisely known as a parallel ventilating Walker D.I. exhaustary fan. It was slightly damaged by the German bomb that landed here in 1941 and was sent for repair to Walker Brothers in Wigan. It was reinstalled in the new building.

You can hear Jim Slaughter talking about the war years or look at a list of air raids at Woodhorn in 1940 or return to colliery buildings.
