Woodhorn 1916 Disaster

On 13th August 1916, thirteen miners - three stonemen, two putters and eight deputies - died in an accident at Woodhorn Colliery. The accident happened on a Sunday night when only the maintenance shift was working - at any other time many more lives would have been lost. Afterwards, mine inspectors tried to find out how it happened and an inquest was held.

This is part of a plan drawn by the investigators using a map originally made in 1913 and you can also see a close-up of the plan showing what the rescuers found when they reached the scene of the disaster.

From here you can read extracts from the coroner's report, see how the victims were remembered, read a diary entry, browse the archive or learn more about mine safety.
