"Another little thing, the wives had cleaned all the pit clothes, for all they were filthy and likely to be filthy again. They didn't want their menfolk walking down the colliery rows to work�and they polished their helmets, their knee pads, their boots and they had to be turned out in a reasonable manner. They didn't want anybody saying that their wives didn't clean their pit clothes."
