Jim Slaughter's Narrative History:

Preparing the Caddy

"collect the caddy, the caddy full of powder, carried about twenty pound of powder. This was a bit of a laugh at times: if you had a young lad starting with you, you would throw the caddy at him ' 'Catch that son!'. He would nearly die of fright! Actually the powder wouldn't ignite, it takes a detonator or a spark, you know, to ignite the powder. And it'll just burn, it's got. When a hole is drilled for the powder, it's got to be stemmed, it's got to be airtight before it'll explode. If it's not airtight, it'll just blow the powder out the hole. So never mind, we collect our equipment, safety lamp, usually a safety lamp was among about six, six or seven men, testing for gas."
