Jim Slaughter's Narrative History:

Bottom of the Shaft

"Once down the pit, actually at the bottom of the shaft conditions were really good. Good height, but as you moved further inbye, it got lower and lower and conditions were worse. We probably worked about an hour away from the shaft. And on the way in, probably had about three stops for a smoke. Smoking was allowed then. This was before the smoking was stopped. We had naked lights, carbide lamp, and it would take us probably an hour to get to the job. Well, that left only five or six hours, for to do the job that you had to do, once you got in."
