Jim Slaughter's Narrative History:

The Heapstead

"Yes, walking down, its funny, you had to go up these steps, to get to the cage. The simple reason you had to go up these steps, it was a marvellous system, the heapstead. The tubs, once they came out of the cage, they ran all the way, they ran about thirty yards first, down this gradualunder their own steam, just a gradual slope, to this large creeper. And this creeper took them to a good height. And away from there the tubs ran all the way round the heapstead, past the weigh, around to the tippers, where they were tipped onto screens, away round the valley, all the way back to the shaft under their own steam, just the gradual incline all the way round. But thats the reason why you didnt sort of just walk along the ground and into the cage. You went up the steps to the high place."
