Woodhorn Colliery: Starting Work
After collecting their lamps, the miners entered the cages that would take them down into the pit. The cages were
connected to cables that were guided by the winding wheels on the headgear and operated by winding gear in the
winding houses. The descent was rapid down the dark shaft.
