Yeavering Saxon Royal Palace: Beyond Yeavering
The land we now know was once Ad Gefrin covers a far larger area than that excavated by Hope-Taylor. Some of the
buried remains can be seen in this picture taken by Tim Gates. As Hope-Taylor wrote at the end of his Preface in
1969:
"Still, that part of Ad Gefrin which lies to the south of the Wooler-Kirknewton road remains uninvestigated.
Outlying buildings of the royal township are manifested annually, whatever the farmer's sowing. More important is
the clear indication that excavation would also yield material for elucidation of the shadowy period roughly from
500BC to AD500" (Hope-Taylor HMSO London 1977).
So here we have an agenda for archaeologists in the future. Find out more about
becoming an archaeologist, go to the Teaching and Learning Site or
return to the Yeavering Home Page.
