Forcegarth: Clothing and Appearance

Most of what we know about people's dress during this period comes from Roman writers, such as Strabo and Diodorus Siculus. Reportedly men wore a close fitting trouser called 'braccae' covered by a long woollen tunic held at the waist with a belt. Over this would have been a long cloak fastened at the shoulder by a brooch or a pin. The textiles were dyed bright colours and were woven in checked or stripy patterns.

Roman writers also mention that both the men and the women wore their hair long and sometimes plaited. The men also had beards or moustaches which they also grew long. The people were physically similar to the people of today. From the studies of skeletons from the few native burials we know that the height of an average woman would have been about 5 foot 2 inches tall, and the average height of a man would have been 5 foot 6 inches tall, though people in the North of Britain were generally a bit taller.
