Low Hauxley Archive: Cist 2 Content

Because the cover stone was in a poor condition, the archaeologists decided to remove one of the end stones of the cist to extract the contents safely. This avoided the chance of the capstone breaking up and collapsing on the finds inside while it was being moved.

Inside were a crouched inhumation burial and a complete pottery beaker. The burial lay on a layer of silty loam and its head was at the east end of the cist, facing west. The full contents of the cist could not be photographed due to the precarious nature of the cist lid. The cist lid could not be removed until after the beaker, skull and major bones were carefully extracted from the side of the cist for safety.

You can watch a video reconstruction of the burial, learn more about prehistoric pottery and pottery conservation, see Cist 2 after the content had been removed or browse the archive.
