Buddles

Buddles used a flow of water to separate lead ore from waste. The earlier buddles were simple troughs inclined at a slight angle. A gentle stream of water flowing down the trough washed the lighter waste material away, leaving the lead ore.

Later buddles had a canvas belt with laths across it. This was rotated against a flow of water. When washed bouse was spread on the belt the lighter waste was washed away and the heavy ore lodged behind the wooden laths and was carried up the belt and deposited in a bin.

Various types of buddles can be seen at Killhope Lead Mining Museum.
