Lead Mine Reconstructions
From the 17th century onwards tunnels called 'adits' or 'levels' were dug into the side of hills to access the lead veins.
The veins were worked by 'overhand stoping', which involved removing ore from the roof of a tunnel driven along the vein.
As the working proceeded upwards, following the vein, new timber floors were built into the upwardly expanding cavity.
Waste material called 'deads' (as seen in image on the left) was left on these successive floors as the workings
progressed.
