The Dangers of Lead Working
Lead is a very toxic metal. Constant exposure to lead and it fumes causes damage to the central nervous system in the
body, resulting in growth impairment, seizures, brain damage, and sometimes death. Nowadays the main exposure to lead
is through lead-based paints in the home or workplace, or through contaminated drinking water passing through lead
pipes. Constant exposure to lead working would undoubtedly have had ill effects on the workers' health.
In addition, accidents did happen during lead working. On 11th October 1887, John Parker, a 29 year old smelter, was
cleaning out the long flue at Lintzgarth Smelt Mill when a rush of water was sent in from the top. It washed him down
to the bottom and caused his death.
