Hushing

Hushing was a method of opencast mining and prospecting. Hushing used water from streams or reservoirs to remove loose debris such as overlying soil and scrub in a controlled way. Hushes have probably been used since Roman times but the very large V shaped hushes such as Fraser's Hush were mostly worked during the 18th century.
