History of Boltsburn Mine

Boltsburn Mine workings provided access to the workings of the Boltsburn vein. West level followed the vein south west of the village and was started in the early 19th century.

East level and Walt's Level provided access to Boltsburn vein, northeast of the village, until development of part of the mine took place during the 19th century by the Beaumont Company. At the end of the 19th century the Weardale Lead Company found a very rich deposit of lead ore in the high quality limestone which made Boltsburn the leading British lead mine. In the 20th century Boltsburn Washing was used to purify fluorspar from several mines. Boltsburn mine finally closed in 1932 without having exhausted the massive lead deposits.
