Iron

Iron is the fourth most abundant element in the earth's crust. The most common ores found are limonites, carbonates and hematites. These ores occur as vein deposits or as nodules within other deposits, for example clay. Once mined either though open cast pits, bell pits or deep mines the ores would need to be processed which would include washing, roasting and crushing.

Roasting the Iron would break down the compounds, this would enable the gases and heat in a furnace to penetrate the iron ore to reduce the iron oxide to iron metal, the slag which would develop from the process would be in a liquid form and so could be separated from the solid iron metal.
