Fuel for Smelting

In the earliest period of ore hearth smelting, from the late 16th century, wood was used as fuel. This meant that early mills tended to be located close to sources of wood. After about 1700 smelt mills increasingly used a mixture of peat and coal. The peat was collected seasonally in the summer and stored in large barns. These were well ventilated to allow the peat to dry.
