Use of Limestone

Limestone has a number of uses, it can be used in the glass making process to make windows, glasses and mirrors. It can also be used to create steel by using the limestone in a blast furnace, it will mix with the impurities in the iron and will create slag.

Limestone has been used as building material for many centuries. When limestone is mixed with clay it forms cement, which gradually sets hard when mixed with water, and mortar by adding sand and water to the cement. This is a photograph of the cement works at Eastgate, which closed down in 2002.
