Transport

Transport was vital to the industrial exploitation of the Rookhope Valley. Until the construction of the railway lead was transported by packhorse across the fells to Gateshead. With the expansion of the ironstone mine in the mid 19th century railways were built to transport iron ore and limestone to the blast furnaces in the coalfield, in order to climb out of the valley up to the Bolts Law incline the trains were pulled by a standing engine at the top of the incline.
