Jiggers

Jiggers were used to sort coarsely ground ore from waste. They worked by placing the mixture of ore and waste in a large rectangular sieve and "jigging" it about in a trough of water.

Early jiggers were called hotching tubs, which were hand operated, but later versions were powered by water wheels. Both hand operated and water powered jiggers can be seen in operation at Killhope Lead Mining Museum.
