Small Find Card: iron knife
A 'small find' is an object found by an archaeologist on site, and can be a nail, coin, brooch, or just about any object.
The term is used to distinguish from 'bulk finds' which usually occur in quantity, such as pottery. Small finds are recorded in
much greater detail than bulk finds.
For the excavations at Thrislington in the early 1970s, small finds were recorded on a small finds card, which contained
its photograph along with the additional identifying information including its location, excavator, and vertical position.
Today this information would probably be recorded on a computer.
This card records one of the iron knives found on site. The large white ruler is a scale bar.
You can see another example of a small find card,
examine sketches of some carved stone objects found on the site, or
browse some of the other objects found on the site.
