Thrislington cottages, excavation photograph

The cottages at Thrislington under excavation during 1974 season. This photograph shows the initial progress of the excavation: the turf has been stripped off and the top layer of soil has been removed. The foundations are now clearly visible.

The strips of soil extending from let to right across the image are called 'baulks' and have been left behind intentionally to preserve the stratigraphy.

See the next image of the excavation in progress, check out the reconstructions of the cottages or explore the virtual reality model.
