The Kitchen
This image shows some elements of a light evening meal: a loaf of bread and a jug of ale or cider. Although of
course the bread is not preserved in the archaeological record, the fragments of quern stone found on the site
show that flour was being ground here, and loaves were undoubtedly baked made in the manor kitchen.
Several knives were found during the excavation, and not all came from the kitchen. During this period knives were
routinely carried - not as a means of personal protection, but rather as a useful tool that was always at hand,
much like one might carry a Swiss Army Knife today.
See some examples of knives found during Thrislington excavation,
step into the undercroft, return to
the kitchen, or see a fragment of quernstone uncovered during the excavations.
