Thrislington: iron knife blades

Iron Knifes

These iron knife blades were found complete with their tangs (the part of the blade that was driven into the handle to keep it secure). The knife on the bottom is missing its blade, but the tang is still embedded in the bone handle. The middle blade has a decorative motif which is clearly visible in the enlarged image (which can always be viewed by clicking the button under the image).

Some of these blades were fairly small, merely 4 or 5 cm long -- about as big as a 'pocket knife' today -- and even the longest found here did not exceed 10 cm.

You can browse other objects discovered on site, see how these knives were sharpened, what they looked like upon excavation or view the reconstruction of a kitchen table at medieval Thrislington.
