Food and Diet

Here you see two fish awaiting preparation for dinner in the manor kitchen.

Diet at the manor would have been varied: bread and pastry were made from wheat and rye flour, porridge from oats and barley was used to brew beer.

Meat would have included venison, beef, lamb, pork, rabbit and various birds. Vegetables included carrots, parsnips, cabbages, peas, beans, onions and leeks. Dishes would have been flavoured with spices such as coriander, dill, thyme or garlic.

See more of the kitchen, or how we know what animals they ate, or how they ground flour.
