The Kitchen

At Thrislington manor, food was stored hanging from the rafters of the kitchen (which was smoky enough to preserve meat) and in two small store-rooms at the back of the kitchen.

One of these rooms was a buttery or wine storage room where archaeologists found the remains of bays for holding barrels. The other room was the pantry, where flour and bread were stored.

From here you can take a closer look at the kitchen table, inspect in detail the chain on which meat was hanging , climb down into undercroft or move further through the kitchen.
