Wark Castle: The Garter Legend
The Order of the Garter is the oldest British Order of Chivalry, founded by Edward III in 1348. The original order
consisted of the king and 25 knights and was the highest reward for loyalty and military merit. From the 18th century
to 1946 appointments were made on the advice of government but today they are chosen personally by the Sovereign. The
Order is awarded to honour those who have held public office, who have contributed in a particular way to national
life or who have served the monarch personally. The number of recipients is limited to 24 plus royal knights.
