Woodhorn Colliery: Safety Badge

This Durham and Northumberland Mines Safety Badge belonged to William Wren. To earn the badge he had to attend evening classes under the title 'The Training of Colliery Boys in Safety Principles'. To keep the badge he had to attend further sessions on a regular basis and pass an examination. The badge was donated to Woodhorn Colliery Museum in 1991, together with a safety training certificate from his second training session in 1936-1937.

You can listen to Jim Slaughter talking about the worry of accidents and find out more about safety lamps and safety in coal mines.
