Woodhorn Colliery: Colliery Life
Coalfield communities have always had a strong identity owing to the nature of the work miners did - it was hard and
dangerous work. Many new villages were created in the 19th century and at Ashington - only a short distance from
Woodhorn, the two rows of houses in 1850 grew to eleven rows by 1890 with a further 1300 houses built over the next
25 years. A well-known saying about Ashington is that it was the largest pit village in the world.
Find out more about the miners at work, social history in the early 20th century
and how the industry was organised.
