Woodhorn Colliery: Social History
In the first half of the 20th century there was a growing awareness amongst left-wing intellectuals that the middle
and upper classes knew little about the lives of the working classes. From publications such as that shown here, to
the Mass Observation movement of the 1930s, it was thought to be a valuable lesson to write about and document the
reality of working class life.
