Jim Slaughter's Narrative History: The Goaf

"And that was the way'Goaf' they call it G.O.A.F, the goaf - waste ground- and that was where I was telling you sometimes they would shout down the face, 'There's gas! 'And you used to get into the face and somebody with a carbide lamp would reach into the waste ground with a carbide lamp and Phhhhw! A big flame went down the waste ground. And men used to do that because they knew if they reported it all the carbide lamps, naked lights, would be stopped, the smoking would be stopped, and they didn't want that to happen."
