Yeavering Saxon Royal Palace: Yeavering Today

It is difficult to imagine that the flat green field that is Yeavering today was once a place where hundreds of people jostled to hear Paulinus, a priest from Rome, preach to them the teachings of a strange new religion.

This aerial photograph shows Yeavering bounded to the south (right) by a road, with a modern forestry plantation on its sloping edge. The quarry, which once threatened to destroy the site, can be seen in the corner of the field (bottom right). You can see other aerial photographs of Yeavering today.

Archaeologists have remained fascinated by Yeavering and research continues today. From here you can read an account of a building nearby, or an account of the site as experienced by a national park archaeologist.

Although the site has been excavated, it still has the potential to tell us more. Find out about the unexcavated Yeavering here or return to the Yeavering Home Page.
