Hushes

There are two main types of hush - prospecting hushes and extractive hushes. Prospecting hushes were uses to remove soil and glacial boulder clay from the top of the vein in order to locate it. They tended to be small and ran across the base of the vein.

Extractive hushes used water to carry away waste material when opencasting on the vein. Extractive hushes ran along the line of the vein and were often very large. Once the lead had been extracted at surface level, a rich vein might be worth further pursuing by underground mining.
