History of Rispey Iron Stone Mine
Mining started at least as early as 1751, initially for lead. After the mine was taken over by the Weardale Iron
Company in the mid 19th century it became the main source of iron carbonate ores in the are. Lead ores continued
to be produced as a valuable side-product.
