Stotsfield and Boltsburn Villages
Stotsfield and Boltsburn villages started off as medieval shielings. Sheilings were temporary settlements for
farmers as they moved their livestock around the fells each summer. Later this area became part of the medieval
forest and in the thirteenth century these settlement areas became Vaccaries, which were small-scale commercial
cattle farms. There was some expansion of settlement from the 18th century as mining activity increased but it
wasn't until the 19th century that both Boltsburn and Stotsfield grew to the size we see today.
Boltsburn was the largest of the two villages and spread towards Stotsfield. By the end of the 19th century these
two originally separate villages had almost joined up and became known as Rookhope Village, which took its name from
the name of the valley.
